Muthurajawela Wetland Bird Watching Tour
Muthurajawela wetland tour provides an exciting birdwatching experience during your stay in Colombo or Negombo.There are many variates of flora and fauna that are interdependent in this coastal ecosystem. The name Muthurajawela has been derived from Sinhalese language which the majority of Sri Lankans use to communicate. The meaning can be translated in to English simply as “Swamp of Royal Treasure”. Treasures of kings in olden days are believed to be buried in that area. Muthurajawela Marsh is situated towards the southern part of Negombo.

You will be picked up from your hotel in Colombo or Negombo by TukTuk and driven to Muthurajawela wetland.

After crossing some wonderful roadside attractions, you will arrive at Muthurajawela.

Proceed with bird watching tour by boat. Extending over 6,000 acres and over 29,000, and rumored to provide home to over 40 species of migratory and 85 indigenous bird species. Mangrove forests that line the footpath are great places to observe birds as well as baby crocodiles and fiddler crabs.

Early morning start 7am - 30 minute tuk tuk from Negombo -well worth it to catch the wildlife . Very well informed guide and boatman - who were happy to point out all the birds and reptiles on show and give us a history of the area. 2 Hour trip - plenty of opportunities for plenty of photos and a coconut break half way.

We spent two days in Negumbo and wanted to tour the protected Muthurajawela Marsh area, which is great for birdwatching. The best time for that is in the morning but we couldn?t make it, so we opted for later in the afternoon. It was a great experience. The day was quite got, so being out on the water was refreshing. The mangroves are an amazing tangle of vegetation - that alone is worth a visit. And in spite of the late hour, we got to see kingfishers, herons, kites, eagles, cormorants, pelicans? and countless other birds
