Ha Gala (Rabbit Rock) Hike

Hawagala is a massive upthrust of earth and stone , somewhat jutting out in peculiar way – almost a sheer stone cuboid half submerged, leaning on to one corner. Ha gala (Rabbit Rock) Mountain (1400m) or Hagala as it is known by the locals is located in beautiful Belihuloya in the Sabaragamuwa Province bordering the Horton Plains National Park. The vegetation is a mixture of montane forest and manna grasslands with scattered pine trees. The trail starts from the village of Landuyaya.

This in turn allows it’s unique profile – seen from far away , especially coming from Haputale , to seem as if has a gentle winding slope , and on rainy days the water streams stemming from the top reflect the sunlight , making the rock seem like a gold vein infused behemoth.

Hawagala is situated next to the village of “Laduyaya” , in Belihul oya . To reach the village you can take the Colombo – Badulla Main highway , or Route 99 and make a turn off the main road right next to the Government run Belihul oya Rest house .

The journey to and from the Rabbit Rock takes around 4-5 hours in total from the hotel, and is a less traveled path, bound with adventure and enthusiasm. The hike passes through different environment units, such as hilly tea estates, cooling forests and savanna lands. The view from the top is definitely worth the climb.
