TISSAMAHARAMA CITY TOUR

Tissamaharama is a town belongs to Hambantota district in Southern province of Sri Lanka. It used to be the capital of the Sinhalese Kingdom of Ruhuna as early as the 3rd century B.C. Only few buildings from that period can still be seen today.

This town is surrounded by the Tissa lake which was built by King Kavantissa, 2300 years ago. There are five main lakes in the vicinity of Tissamaharama: Tissa Wewa; Yoda Wewa; Weerawila Wewa; Pannegamuwa Wewa; and Debarawewa Wewa. You can walk around lakes and stop at scenic locations to capture breath-taking views. You will also witness monitors and bird species while your ride around the lake.

The town's landscape is dominated by gigantic semi-circle shaped ancient Buddhist Dagobas. During this city tour, you will enjoy the visit to Tissamaharama and Debarawewa temples.

Tissamaharama temple is one of the major monasteries in Sri Lanka which enshrined the largest stupa in Southern region of the country. It believes that this vihara has been made by Lord Buddha himself with 500 other individuals who reached enlightenment.

Debarawewa Pashchimarama Rajamaha Viharaya is situated on the bank of Kirindi Oya, by the side of the Weerawila-Debarawewa main road. Construction of this temple is attributed to King Mahanaga of the 3rd century BC. This was an important temple, very near the capital city of Ruhuna, which went into obscurity with the change of the capital during the 12th century. A statue of the Buddha carved out of limestone was found at this temple and is kept in a temporary shelter. Statue bases, pillar bases and flower alter made of stone are found at this temple.
