BELILENA CAVE CYCLING TRAIL

Located just 80 kilometers from Colombo along the A7 main road to Nuwara Eliya via Avissawella, Kitulgala is a charming town nestled amidst verdant hills and tropical vegetation. Named after the abundant Kitul palm tree found in the area, Kitulgala offers a picturesque setting and serves as a gateway to adventure and exploration in Sri Lanka.

Known for its lush rainforest environment and two monsoon seasons annually, Kitulgala is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Despite its status as one of the wettest places in Sri Lanka, the town comes alive in the first three months of the year, especially in February, the driest month. Its natural beauty has attracted international attention, notably serving as a filming location for the Academy Award-winning movie "The Bridge on the River Kwai."

Kitulgala draws large crowds from Colombo on weekends, offering stunning scenery and a variety of outdoor activities. The Kelani River, which flows through the town, provides opportunities for swimming, washing, and playing, particularly in the shallower areas during the drier months. Adventure seekers flock to Kitulgala for white-water rafting, jungle walks, waterfall jumps, and slides, while local restaurants serve up delicious rice and curry lunches.

For birding enthusiasts, Kitulgala is a paradise, boasting a diverse array of avian species, including many found in the World Biosphere Reserve at Sinharaja. The town's secondary forest and cultivation areas offer a unique habitat, making it easier to spot elusive endemic species such as the Sri Lanka Spurfowl, Green-billed Coucal, and Spot-winged Thrush.

Beyond its natural attractions, Kitulgala offers cultural and historical experiences. Cycling to Belilena Cave allows visitors to explore rural village lifestyles and ancient archaeological sites. Belilena Cave is home to the 12,000-year-old skeletal remains of "Balangoda man," providing insights into ancient human history. The cave's interior is inhabited by thousands of bats, adding to its mystique, while colorful butterflies dance around its entrance.

In conclusion, Kitulgala offers a wealth of experiences for travelers seeking adventure, natural beauty, and cultural exploration. Whether rafting on the Kelani River, bird watching in the rainforest, or exploring ancient caves, visitors to Kitulgala are sure to be captivated by its charm and diverse attractions.
